Tabish Hashmi, a well-known TV host, recently raised a bold point in the media: just as PIA was privatized after government failure, Karachi should also be handed back to its own people. His argument struck a nerve. Karachiites feel that if the city truly belonged to those who live here, they would manage it far better than the current system ever has.
Through his programs, Tabish Hashmi has consistently highlighted Karachi’s real issues, problems that many believe even the sitting mayor seems unaware of. This growing awareness has led people to discuss a serious idea: that someone like Tabish Hashmi understands Karachi more deeply and honestly than traditional politicians.
The recent Gul Plaza tragedy is a painful example. It was not a minor incident but a massive disaster. Yet, the Mayor of Karachi appeared almost 23 hours later, scolded people for “politicizing” the issue, left and later offered an apology. Meanwhile, victims’ remains are still being recovered from the rubble. This alone shows the scale of the tragedy and the scale of official indifference.
Karachi has suffered many such disasters over the years. Sadly, seriousness from the authorities is rarely seen. Responsibility is passed around, blame is shifted, and real work remains invisible. What Karachi gets consistently are problems, not solutions.
This is why people are talking. Not because Tabish Hashmi is a celebrity but because Karachi is desperate for leadership that listens, understands, and acts.
